Living Before the Father’s Eyes

You have served faithfully. Nobody seems to have noticed. What happens in your heart?

“…and your Father who sees what is done in secret will reward you.”
Matthew 6:4 • Read Matthew 6:1–18

Your Father sees

Jesus’ teaching about giving, prayer and fasting reaches beneath our activity to our motives. We can do good things while quietly hoping they will secure admiration.

It is easy to recognise that tendency in someone else. Jesus’ words invite a more personal question: whose approval am I seeking?

But listen to how He speaks. Again and again, He draws His disciples’ attention to their Father. The One who sees what is hidden also knows what they need.

His warning calls us back to the Father’s presence. Our service does not become worthless when people overlook it.

See the Son

Now look at Jesus Himself.

He knew misunderstanding and rejection. Yet He repeatedly withdrew to pray, and He lived to please His Father (Luke 5:16; John 8:29). Behold His faithful love and His steady obedience.

He has already told His disciples to let their light shine so that others glorify their Father (Matthew 5:16). Public service can honour God. Matthew 6 exposes the desire to gather that glory for ourselves.

The issue is not visibility. The issue is the destination of the glory.

We can receive appreciation gratefully and still direct attention to Christ. We can serve faithfully when appreciation never comes.

Remain in Him

Jesus’ words elsewhere bring us to its source: “Remain in Me” (John 15:4).

The branch receives life from the Vine. Our hidden fellowship with Christ sustains what others eventually see. His Word must feed us before we share it. Prayer is communion before it becomes preparation for service.

Have I become so occupied with serving Jesus that I have neglected being with Him?

Let the question bring you to Him. Hear His Word. Yield the desire to be admired. Trust the Spirit, who glorifies Christ, to turn your attention towards Him (John 16:14).

Christ is the pursuit. Everything else is the fruit.

Serve in freedom

Today, bring your disappointment honestly to the Father. Thank Him for kindness received. Then take the next step of obedience.

You do not need to keep checking whether people have noticed. You can look again at Jesus.

Lord Jesus, has my service become a search for recognition? Search my heart, nourish my fellowship with You, and teach me to treasure You above the approval of others. May the Father receive the glory.

“The servant does not live to be noticed, nor does he need to fear being noticed. He lives before the Father, abides in the Son, and serves through the Spirit—so that Christ may be seen and God glorified.”

Father, You see my heart and know my longing to be accepted. Forgive me when human approval becomes my treasure. Thank You for Your beloved Son, who lived in perfect fellowship with You. Lord Jesus, nourish my hidden life and teach me to remain in You. Holy Spirit, turn my wandering attention towards Christ. May my service flow from communion with Him and bring glory to the Father. Amen.

If nobody noticed what I did for Christ today, would the joy of knowing Him still be enough?
