While we struggle, suffer and sleep, our living Saviour continues to care for us.
“He always lives to make intercession for them.”
Hebrews 7:25 • Read Hebrews 7:24-25
Look at our living Saviour
I was quite curious when I first came across this question: What is Jesus doing now? We remember His cross and await His return. But what about today?
Through Christ, God reconciled us to Himself (2 Corinthians 5:18-19). His sacrifice is complete. His care for those He redeemed continues.
Hebrews tells us that His priesthood is permanent. He lives to intercede for those who come to God through Him.
Consider three ways Scripture helps us understand that care: protection, preservation and pardon.
Protection amid temptation
Jesus looked beyond Peter’s failure to his restoration.
Before Peter denied Him, Jesus said, “But I have prayed for you, that your faith will not fail” (Luke 22:32).
Peter would stumble badly. Yet Jesus’ words anticipated his return and the strengthening of his brothers.
When temptation exposes our weakness, we can turn to this same Saviour. Do I remember His care when I feel most vulnerable?
Preservation through suffering
Romans 8:34 points us to Jesus, who died, rose again and now intercedes for us. Paul then asks what can separate us from His love.
Trouble, persecution, hunger and danger are real. Yet none can separate His people from that love.
Our High Priest understands our weakness. Through Him, we can approach the throne of grace confidently for mercy and help (Hebrews 4:15-16). What burden am I carrying alone?
Pardon when we sin
John writes so that believers will not sin. Yet when we do, “we have an Advocate with the Father, Jesus Christ the righteous” (1 John 2:1).
His advocacy rests on His completed sacrifice. We can confess honestly, trusting the righteous Saviour who represents us.
His mercy calls us to repentance. Is there a sin I am excusing or concealing instead of bringing to Him?
We may pass through suffering, but we do not pass beyond His care.
Let these truths lead us beyond examining our struggles.
Look again at Jesus.
Behold the Saviour who lives to intercede.
See His faithfulness towards failing disciples.
See His compassion for our weakness.
See the righteousness of our Advocate.
Hear His Word inviting us to approach the throne of grace. Bring Him the need you have been holding back.
The King whose kingdom has no end will return. Our present weakness will give way to transformed life in His presence.
Until then, we can rest in Him. Tonight, as we close our eyes, our living Saviour continues to care for us.
Prayer
Lord, am I trusting Your continuing care?
Lord Jesus, where fear has narrowed my vision, turn my eyes towards You.
Teach me to rest in Your faithful love.
Help me confess my sin, seek Your grace and obey Your Word. Keep me looking towards Your return. Amen.
